Editorial Reviews:

The Black Diamond Zenix Headlamp has been upgraded with IQ technology that increases its efficiency. The IQ system give the Zenix IQ constant, consistent lighting, and a mode memory so you don't have to cycle through every mode to pick up where you left off. IQ also offers a handy-dandy charge meter, so you know the state of your batteries before they die at 12,000 feet. The same winning combo of a lensed hyperbright LED and twin superbright LEDs as the regular Zenix give you the right lighting options for any job. The Zenix IQ is as efficient and light as only LED's can be. All the advantages of LED, none of the disadvantages.

Summary: Bright light.
Comment: I've had several head lamps. The Black Diamond Zenix with its hyperbright LED is the whitest and brightest.

Summary: Bright Light
Comment: This was purchased as a gift for a duck hunter. He had used other head lamps but absolutely loved this one for the brightness and accuracy of the light when he moves his head. I would highly recommend this product!

Summary: This is much better than my previous Petzl headlamp
Comment: I bought an older model of the Petzl E32 P Myolite 3 Headlamp a couple of years ago for a trip to the Grand Canyon. Although it works well when on the move, whether for hiking at night, or finding your way to the water cooler or latrine, it has two drawbacks when using it in a fixed location:
- a: even when using the 3-leds (which is the less-bright option), it is so bright that one can not easily use it for reading, nor can one use it in ones tent without disturbing your tent-buddy.
- b: even when using the 3-leds it is so bright that it is difficult to use it to read, since it makes the white of the page reflect back at you.

Also, the weight is a bit heavy on one's head.

It is for these reasons that I just went out and bought the Black Diamond Zenix IQ for my upcoming trip to Yosemite. I have been playing with it in my apartment tonight (with the lights turned off), and I can already tell that this Black Diamond model is far superior to the Petzl I bought 2 years ago. The Zenix IQ has the following features:
- it is much lighter and more comfortable than the Petzel
- it has 6 brightness settings (as opposed to Petzel's 2): it has 3 settings for the two LEDs, and it has 3 settings for the ultra-bright bulb.
- it has a multi-function colored LED that acts as both a headlamp finder in the middle of the night (when you wake up and are looking for your headlamp), and as a battery meter to warn you ahead of time when your batteries are starting to get low.

Summary: Love it!
Comment: I'm a runner and my schedule forces me to run mostly at night on work days. A large part of my nightly run is on unlighted streets. I needed a light to see and help be seen. I tried carrying a small flashlight but found it to be a pain in the....wrist! I run hot and never wear a hat in the winter, even though I live in Montana, so I was hesitant to try it due to the increased sweat factor and the potential for fogging up my glasses. I got one as a Christmas gift. (If I hated it, I wouldn't be out the bucks!) It's wonderful! It is so light that I don't notice it is there. The stap is quite adjustable so a person can make it as tight or loose as one wants. It can be easily adjusted for the bare head, over a hat or even over a bike helmet. Unlike many other brands, this light is also adjustable up and down. The 3 different light level settings each for the HyperBright and the SuperBright LED's make it quite adaptable for different needs. I've found that the HyperBright medium setting works best for me even in remote unlighted areas. The colored light battery life indicator ensures that I don't run out of power in the middle of a run or change batteries prematurely. The ability to see and avoid road hazards greatly improves the enjoyment of my night runs. When I first started using it, I planned on switching the light off on lighted streets to extend battery life. I soon discovered the number of cars (inadvertently or not)swerving at me decreasing tremendously as well as the number of courteous drivers moving over for a safer distance increasing when I kept the light on in lighted areas. I highly recommend the Zenix IQ!
Cons:
The on/off button is impossible for me to use when wearing gloves.
Just like any other battery powered device I've ever owned, the batteries don't last nearly as long as the owner's manual suggests. Low temperatures really zap battery life but that is to be expected. Luckily, AA batteries are inexpensive.
