Smart, sleek, and more than a little wicked, the Golden Globe-winning series Damages proves that legal programs don't have to follow a well-worn formula in order to prove completely addictive. In fact, the show (from Todd and Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman, whose credits include The Sopranos) steers clear from nearly all courtroom drama clichés over the course of its 13 episodes, and hews closer to classic film noir with the slowly-spun web of deceit that is woven around fresh-scrubbed lawyer Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne). After joining the legal firm headed by uber-powerful litigator Patty Hewes (Glenn Close, who won a Golden Globe for her performance), Parsons lands a career-making case--a class-action lawsuit against millionaire Arthur Frobisher (Golden Globe nominee Ted Danson)--but discovers that digging deeply into the case not only reveals layers of corruption, cover-up, and potential scandal, but places her own life in jeopardy as well. Smart, mature writing and note-perfect performances, most notably by Danson as the perverse and complex Frobisher, but also by Tate Donovan, Zeliko Ivanek, Peter Facinelli, Philip Bosco and Peter Reigert, make Damages a genuine pleasure for law and mystery show fans, but also those craving a challenging series that delivers water cooler chat material in every episode. The three-disc set includes all 13 episodes as well as deleted scenes; among the featured extras are two choice commentaries, one with Close, the Kesslers and Zelman, and the other with Ivanek and the creators, both of which are chock-full of production and technical insights. A 30-minute making-of featurette, discussions about the characters by the creators, and a guide to class-action lawsuits rounds out the fine supplemental features. --Paul Gaita

Customer Rating: Summary: Self-interest, corruption, polititcs, and greed! Comment: This is a really great TV series and I really enjoyed the many twists that kept me guessing throughout the episodes--and guessing wrong most of the time. I've always wanted to be a lawyer, among many other professions, and I immediately picked up this series upon seeing it at the Duty Free shop at Heathrow International Airport.
This series exposes the world of litigations, and how they operate. The whole season is about a class action lawsuit targeting one of the wealthiest CEOs (Chief Executive Officer). When lawyers try to win at all cost, lives and fortunes are lost. Is it worth it all? Are lawyers angels or demons in disguise? How far would we go for money? Is money worth destroying the lives of others? Are secrets worth killing for? Would we kill for money? How much money is enough? What is the price of betrayal, and when is betrayal ethical? These are just a few of the questions you will be asking yourself as you go through this series.
The way the series is structured is that it shifts between past events and future ones. I did find this system to be confusing at times, but it does have its merits.
This is a fast paced series. The acting is superb and the episodes are very well written and believable. The ending is spectacular, and unanticipated. I can't wait for season two.
Customer Rating: Summary: it will do Damage Comment: to your sleeping time. The show is very addictive and intriguing as it keeps you into it throughout every episode. Of course we have Glenn Close playing as a top notch, take no prisoners and ruthless attorney defending people that were swindled out of their pensions and savings from the corrupt boss played by Ted Danson. Who also does a wonderful job is his role. As does the new attorney played by Rose Byrne who starts out as a wide eyed, the world is wonderful person. But by season end so many things will happen to her that will change not only her views. But her very way of life as well.
An excellent show and an well written and directed first season. There are so many other characters in the show that do their thing acting as well. Well worth your buying but rent a couple episodes first to make sure this show is your cup of tea. Really looking forward to the next season of Damages without a doubt.
Customer Rating: Summary: Compelling Series On Seldom Watched FX channel Comment: I have watched some shows on the FX channel "Rescue Me" "Dirt" "Nip/Tuck" "The Shield" and all of these shows are quality shows, but it is "Damages" that really is the gem of the channel's growing fame. Glenn Close is in a somewhat familiar role as 'devil in a dress' and Ted Danson is brilliant as the embattled CEO of a failed company (see: Ken Lay, ENRON). The lovely and understated Rose Byrne is a perfect counter to a dominant Glen Close. "Damages" is a legal thriller that we find you carving up your free time into 42min units because like a really good cookie one episode is never enough. That's the best reason to buy the box set. I can't imagine the torture of having to wait 167 hours each week for the next epsiode. I'm ready for season 2.
Customer Rating: Summary: Just barelty entertainment Comment: Damages is yet another example of a new trend in movie and tv series making: endless and unrealistic layers of conspiracy on conspiracy that become so thick and unbelievable, that instead of engaging the audience even more, they care less and less. The more unpredictable the show tries to be, the more predictable it becomes.
I do give credit to the format, the story essentially being told backwards slowly revealing details and keeping the watcher on edge, however the extent of cover-ups, double crosses, conspiracy and more that build up go from suspenseful to just plain amusing.
In the end, the show is just barely worth your while and solely as entertainment, not quality television.
Customer Rating: Summary: Situation Unlikely, but Great Suspense! Comment: I think I find this show very appealing because I don't know much about the law and how things really are in a court room, but I thoroughly enjoy the character development and the tension in the storyline. For those who don't mind letting loose and enjoying a real roller coaster ride, this show is for you!
